What is the definition of a disability? There is no one standard definition of disability, but the definition set forth in the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) states that an individual with a disability is a person who: 1) has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities; 2) has a record of such an impairment; or 3) is regarded as having such an impairment.
Where can I find more information on specific disabilities? The Job Accommodation Network has a website with searchable information.
Where can I get information about making workplace accommodations? For a searchable online accommodation resource, you can go to the Job Accommodation Network website, or you may contact or email the EDRN and and Iowa rehabilitation professional will respond within 2 business days.
We need an interpreter for an appointment. How can I find one? Sign Language Interpreters are required to hold a license in Iowa. You can find information on where to find a licensed interpreter, how to work with an interpreter, etc. on the Deaf Services Commission of Iowa website at www.state.ia.us/government/dhr/ds and selecting “Interpreting” from the menu.
What is a TTY? A TTY or TDD is a text telephone that allows someone who cannot hear to type a message electronically over the phone line. Only another person with a TTY can decode the message and respond. Relay service is available in every state in the nation under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
