What is the definition of a disability?

There is no one standard definition of disability, but the definition set forth in the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) states that an individual with a disability is a person who: 1) has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities; 2) has a record of such an impairment; or 3) is regarded as having such an impairment.

How many people with disabilities are there in Iowa?

Persons with disabilities represent the single largest minority group needing employment in today’s market. The approximate 220,000 working-age Iowans with disabilities (21 – 64 year olds) represents 12.4% of our state’s total population. (Cornell University Disability Status Report, 2007)

How much does it cost to accommodate workers with disabilities?

Most workers with disabilities require no special accommodations and studies by the Office of Disability Employment Policy’s Job Accommodation Network (JAN) have shown that the vast majority of workplace accommodations that are necessary cost under $600.
